In Memoriam of "Craig Helmholz"
Craig Helmholz inspired our program. Craig began volunteering with SKFR (Dist 7) in 1995.
He was exceptional because he continued to serve the community through the department
even after beginning his battle with cancer. Sadly, Craig passed away in November 1999.
Craig is seen above; posing with his girlfriend Nicole at a local parade and enjoying
some leisure activity at home.

Marie reported on her status in 2010.
"I am in my fourth year at the University of Washington, and I'll be graduating next winter
with a double degree in Public Health (BS) and Medical Anthropology (BA) and a minor in Spanish.
My time so far at the UW has been pretty action-packed. In my first year I rowed for the UW
Novice Women's Crew Team and studied abroad for a summer in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am
currently an intern at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with a group that studies
the effects of diet and exercise on breast cancer prevention. In addition, I am completing
my senior thesis in the department of Anthropology on dietary change in immigrant populations
in Seattle. My future plans include a Master of Public Health that focuses on community-level
nutrition. I hope to spend my life working on chronic disease prevention through diet. As I
have experienced deaths in my family due to cancer, I am grateful for the opportunity to work
in this field.
I want to thank you again for making it possible for me to take advantage of so many opportunities,
and for getting in touch again! I am really proud to come from such a wonderful community."

KCFD 7 Volunteer Association. (Above photo) Scholarships presented by
volunteer members Chuck Kuhn and Scott Lucke.
Brandi reported back to the Association with an update in April of 2009.
"Thanks to the generous monetary support I received from the scholarship In Memoriam of Craig Helmholtz,
I was able to graduate from college in four years, without debt. Now I work in higher education, and I
have an opportunity to positively impact college student’s lives and help them navigate the same academic,
social, and financial issues I experienced as a student. Without generous support from my community,
I may not have been able to get the education I did, and I may not have been able to help other’s the
way that I can today.
Additionally, the monetary support I received for college made it more possible for me to be more
focused on my academics and involved in community service activities instead of working all of the
time to pay the bills. I think that Craig would have been proud to know that his memory allowed me
to be involved in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life,” to raise money and awareness about
cancer, both as a participant and as a team captain multiple times during my college career. In this
way, his memory affected many others than just myself, and I know it will continue to do so with future
recipients of this wonderful scholarship."

for Student Affairs Administration. I currently work at DigiPen Institute of Technology
(a school for video game developers) in Redmond, WA."
